Somaliland and Somalia; Let me take you on a trip to a place you’ve probably never visited nor know a lot about: Somaliland at the top of the Horn of Africa with Hargeisa as its capital.

No, it is not Somalia with its capital Muqdishu; as a former English protectorate Somaliland used to be part of what was Somalia until it fell apart in the early 1980s and has been at war ever since. And it is also not the same as Puntland (see the map below) which has declared itself autonomous but not independent from Somalia.

Difficult? Yes – but don’t worry. You don’t have to know all those details to follow me on this trip to Hargeisa, Berbera and Burao in Somaliland.

The story I will now tell in pictures and short texts below can be read as it is. But you might also like this short background to what is a rather complex history.
